I originally got a bunch of chips and one of those somewhat cheezy aluminum cases. It was a 300 chip case, but once we started having more than 4 or 5 people over for tournaments, we needed more chips. So I got more chips and so I need a new case. I built the case out of 1/2" baltic birch plywood. I like the way it looks, and the exposed end grain looks very modern to me. I built it as a bix and then sawed it in half. That seemed to be easiest, and made sure everything was square. The hardware is from my old aluminum chip case, with the exception of the piano hinge that makes this case very sturdy.
I think the combination of 250 whites, 150 reds, and 100 greens seems to work well for tournaments as well as cash games. We usually play a small cash game with the whites being dimes, reds being fifty cents. For tournaments, just use whites as 1, reds as 5, and greens as 25. It scales pretty well. For a slightly bigger cash game, it would be nice to have more greens to use as quarters, and whites as dollars, so if you play a game that size, more greens would make sense.
